    Biography

Dr. Abrahm received her MD from the University of California at San Francisco in 1973, completed internship and residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and served as a chief resident at Moffitt Hospital (of UCSF). After completing a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, she joined the faculty in 1980 and worked there until December 2000. She joined DFCI in 2001 as director of the Pain and Palliative Care Program.

    Research

    Pain and Palliative Care

I am a co-investigator on a project exploring the interface of palliative care and oncology. The investigation will study the impact of biweekly palliative care assessment on the quality of life, the completion of advance directives, and the referral to hospice of patients with mesothelioma. It is part of a larger study, led by Dr. Alice Kornblith, of the quality of life of cancer patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

In addition, I am the codirector of our accredited fellowship in palliative care and the course director for "Practical Aspects of Palliative Care: Integrating Palliative Care into Clinical Practice," a Harvard continuing medical education course. I conduct inpatient palliative care teaching rounds, lectures, and seminars; serve on the Board of HealthCare Dimensions Hospice, and participate in faculty development courses in palliative care. I also helped develop and operationalize the Intensive Palliative Care Unit at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
